- You mentioned yesterday that you and Chris have become very-very close and you are almost like brothers now.

- How did that realationship develop from the screen readings to the film making onwards?
- You know it’s really funny. I first met him with Ken Branagh in the summer of 2009 and we just got on immediately. It was really instant, like a really instant connection. I think partly because we are both quite close in age and we have similar, sort of, hopes and dreams and similar tastes and we got on like a house on fire (an idiom which means «ладить друг с другом», «жить душа в душу»), pretty much like instantaneously. And Natalie Portman was also there. And while he was having a quiet word for now or two with just Natalie on her own about the character Jane Foster, Ken thought it might be a good idea for us to go and train together, So we were in Ken’s garden in England and in the absence of a gym we were lifting tree trunks and logs and all kinds of things that Chris was doing to get into the Thor shape, so by the time it got to my hour I suggested we just go for a swim..um.. *laughing* ..which is a little bit more like Loki. And then it was just, you know, we were just very instantly connected I think. It’s weird how…we talked about the relationship between Thor and Loki and how they are two halves of the same whole in a sense. Thor is the alphamale, Thor is the leader of the pack, he is strong and powerful and noble and proud. And Loki is fiercely intelligent, he is a master of magic, he is the strategist. So the two of them together are a force to be reckoned with…but competing against each other for the same thing which is the love and affection of their father makes it inherently dramatically interesting. It’s wonderful things that people like yourself have said “You really do seem like brothers”. I don’t think that we can consciously act that, you just get lucky and there is a deep friendship that we have which somehow reads between us.
- You said that you first read for this in 2009. It took you four months to get the role?
- Yeah, it did, yeah.
- How did that whole process go down from first reading for the role to actually auditioning again and again to having the role?
- Gosh, I first went in…Ken Branagh had written some very specific scenes but the character wasn’t specific. And so, I think anyone auditioning for any role in the film read the same stuff and there were three scenes: one was very flirtatious with a woman, and one was absolutely marchal and war-like and the third one was very-very emotional and required a sort of stripping away of any strength and showing the revelation of some degree of vulnerability. And I did this and then my agents called and they said “Ken wants to see you for a screen test in six weeks” and it was actually for the part of Thor because like every other blonde English-speaking actor over 6’2 in this world *laughing*. And later I found out the reason I was seen in that group was because they wanted to see in whoever played Thor – they wanted to see if they were balanced with whatever I had which is a huge compliment. But I didn’t know that at the time, so I went into the gym for those six weeks, put on 20 pounds of muscle, got into Thor shape *laughing*, got used to regular diet of chicken and eggs for about 5 times a day. And then about a month after that screen test – it was the end of April 2009 – I got a phone call from Keneth and from the Marvel producers saying “We found another Thor but we’d like you to play Loki” and by then I’ve already knew the kind of part that Loki was so I was thrilled and overjoyed to be playing him.
- How were you on the …smth?
- Kind of gobsmacked (ошарашен), actually. I spent four months in LA, doing all these auditions and I was back in London, you know, picking up the fragments of the life I left behind and I was in North London, outside a pub and it was a Saturday night. And I took the call and it was unexpected…I didn’t expect it, it came out of nowhere. And…I let out…some kind of scream. And then I just had to sit on the pavement and contemplate my existence for a bit.
- Now the final result is amazing. I’ve seen it twice.
- *surprised* Have you? Wow!
- So I actually have a Loki statue at home

- One of the things that amazes me about this is so many characters were perfectly cast. Chris as Thor…
- Chris is absolutely magnificent!
- …Idris as Heimdall was really good, Jaimie as Sif and yourself as Loki. It’s just hard to see anybody else in those roles now that I’ve seen you in those roles. What do you think…Is it Kenneth that brought all this together? How did this all come together in this package so wonderfully?
- I guess it is, yeah, I guess you have to start with Ken because the kind of man that he is…By the way, it is so kind of you that you say that, you didn’t have to…He just has such passion for ir, he has such a passion for the character, for the story, for the material, for everything to do with Thor, really. And it didn’t matter whether you were an actor or you were building the set or writing the music or driving people to work or, you know, recording sound, whatever anyone was doing on this film in for the two years that it took to make it, they felt like they were really pulling together to make the most thrilling piece of cinema that we could. And he is the kind of director who doesn’t leave a stone unturned, every possibility is excavated with a kind of forensic (судебный) curiosity. He is never sitting back on any laurels (лавры), never saying “No, we could just play it safe, we’ve got this”. He was relentless in a way, in his pursues (погоня) of truth, of excitement, of drama, of character. We had a month of rehearsal, which is unheard-of on films of this size where every principal character had to clear their diary, get to LA, rehearse the stunts, sit at round tables with him, with the writer Don Pane – tremendous writer – and the producers Craig Kyle and Kevin Feige (Кевин Файги) and discuss things like backstory. Chris, Jaimie, myself and the three warriors – Josh Dallas, Ray Stevenson and Tadanobu Asano were instructed to train together to four weeks. We did a mixture of kung fu and yoga every morning, because he wanted the six of us to have a shared experience of physical discipline. There is no moment in the film, where we are actually doing that, but there is smth between us, where you believe, when the six Asgardian warriors are going to Jotunheim, these guys know what they’re doing – they are bonded by something. So I suppose it’s those kind of practices and that kind of…it really is a creative discipline to chase down the most exciting dynamic, truthful way of doing things and Ken never stopped. I mean he just was…we were always working to get it right.
Now I don’t know if it was your most intense scene but it is actually one of my favourite scenes in the movie when you confront Anthony Hopkins, your father Odin, over your origin ‘cause it is actually such a powerful scene. If anything I wish there was more of that in the movie because it’s so good.
- Oh, thanks, man!
- Was that the most intense that you were throughout the whole movie? Was that like the hottest day or the most demanding day for you?
- It’s really interesting that you say that ‘cause I actually found it one of the most enjoyable days. It was the first day of the entire shoot, actually, that was really about acting. The first two weeks was just the battle with the frost giants, lots of stunts, lots of fighting, which brings in so much challenges but it wasn’t specifically about…it’s just the scene between two people and in the shooting schedule that was the very-very first proper acting scene in a way. It was Anthony Hopkins’ first day on the film and I was so privileged to see the excitement in both Kenneth Branagh and Anthony Hopkins working with the other. Both of them privately confessed to me in the course of the day. You know, Tony sat me down and said: *изображая голос Энтони Хопкинса и валлийский акцент* “My God, isn’t it exciting? And I want to see your soul.” It’s really an amazing thing to be asked to do by a man of his stature. So it wasn’t so much a challenge, it was a privilege.
- The other experience of being a part of the Marvel universe now. This is something that…I guess on films unprecedented, connecting all these films together bit by bit and now Thor can easily stand as smth standard of the movie but it is part of a bigger universe. Do you feel any, I don’t know, any connection to that other universe or is it a sole little Thor? I mean obviously you’ve only done Thor but knowing that this movie connects, is there any anticipation, any hope, desires there for you to be part of that family?
- Absolutely, I think Loki will probably reemerge from the shadows in the way that people least expect. I mean it’s just a thrill. I remember I was working with Ken Branagh on the TV-show called “Wallander” in Sweden which is about a police detective and the Swedish police, a thriller series to intense our purposes, both of us playing policemen. And on one of my days-off I travelled into the local town, went to the movies and I saw “Iron man”, a little independent house picture called “Iron man” *laughing*, and I wasn’t particularly familiar with Iron man as the character. I knew who Robert Downey Juniour was, though. And I was soo surprised at how brilliant it was, and I said to Ken: “I’ve been just to see this film called “Iron man”, it’s amazing!” – and he then went to see it. And this was before “Thor” even existed in either of our minds and then to suddenly be in the next one is for both of us, I think, is such a privilege. And what they are doing at Marvel… it is such a brilliant imaginative organization and Kevin Feige, who is at the top of the tree, is the top of the Marvel nine realms. He has such an extraordinary mind, the capacity to hold all of these characters in one stable and make them co-exist in the same cinematic universe. So, I hope that Loki will be back to make mischief somewhere else but, ya know, who knows.
- Now, if you can explain one thing to me at the end when you reappear. Is it supposed to be your character possessing Stellan Skaarsgard or you controlling him, or is that yourself appearing as Stellan Skaarsgard? Are you able to ..неразборчивый глагол… any light on that?
- Well, it’s aaa…Gosh, I don’t know if I should tell you *заговорщическим голосом* In my own mind, I think, essentially the disappearance of Loki at the end of the film is…you know, he disappears through space and time, who knows quite where he goes at that point. And I think after the credits the scene is maybe a hint to where he’s ended up. And baremind, this is a master of magic we’re dealing with, so mind-trickery, invisibility, self-duplication – these are all within his skill set.
- Time travel?

- …Идрис в роли Хеймдалля был действительно хорош, Джейми в роли Сиф и Вы в роли Локи. После того как я увидел вас, играющих эти роли, сложно представить на этом месте кого-то другого. Как думаете – именно Кеннет свел всё это воедино? Как же всё в фильме объединилось таким замечательным образом?
- Вы раньше бывали в Австралии?
- Нет, я здесь впервые.

- Великолепно. Совершенно поразительно. Извините, у меня мятная конфета. *указывает на рот* Я прибыл в Сидней в субботу ночью, сегодня понедельник. Воскресным утром мы ходили завтракать на Бонди Бич и смотрели на серферов, которые ловили волны. Это чудесно, мне очень нравится здесь.

- Знаете, было очень занятно. Я впервые встретился с ним у Кена Брана летом 2009, и мы сразу же нашли общий язык. Произошло это действительно моментально, как мгновенное подсоединение. Полагаю, это случилось отчасти оттого, что у нас примерно одинаковый возраст, отчасти похожие желания и мечты, схожие вкусы; мы поладили друг с другом почти сразу же.
Натали Портман также была там. И в то время как Кен разговаривал с Натали с глазу на глаз о её персонаже Джейн Фостер, он подумал: тренироваться нам вместе - неплохая мысль.
Итак, мы оказались в саду Кена в Англии. Так как спортзала не было, мы поднимали стволы деревьев, бревна - всё то, что Крис делал, чтобы придать себе облик Тора. A Локи невероятно умен; он - мастер магии, он - стратег. Таким образом, вместе они являются силой, с которой нельзя не считаться…но они борются друг с другом за одно и то же – любовь и расположение их отца, что делает фильм, по сути, значительно интереснее.
Замечательно, что такие люди как ты, говорите: “Вы и в самом деле кажетесь братьями”.
Не думаю, что мы бы смогли поступать так сознательно. Нам просто повезло, и наши глубокие дружеские отношения так или иначе читаются между нами.

- Боже, я впервые приступил…Кен Брана написал несколько отдельных сцен, но персонаж был еще неопределенным. И я полагаю, каждый, кто проходил пробы на роль в фильме, читал одно и то же: три сцены, в одной из которых персонаж не прочь пофлиртовать с женщиной, в другой - абсолютный лидер, воинственный, а в третьей - чрезмерно эмоционален, что предусматривает отсутствие силы, и при этом ты обнаруживаешь и показываешь определенную степень ранимости. Я сделал все это; позже позвонили мои агенты и сказали: «Keн желает видеть вас на пробах через 6 недель». В тот момент это были пробы на роль Тора, как для любого другого светловолосого англоговорящего актера выше 6 футов 2 дюймов [188 см] в этом мире *смеется*.
